Sunday Before Exams Part #1

It’s Sunday the 14th of September, 2008. It’s 4:50 PM, and I’ve yet to really study that much for my exams which began tomorrow (Monday) and go until next Wednesday. Yesterday, Dad arrived back home after being away for nearly five months, and so I spent some time with him and my family, watched some movies (The Chronicles of Riddick, Death at a Funeral, and Munich) and then I wasted the rest of Saturday doing random, un-productive things whilst I should have been studying.

Now it’s 4:50 (actually 4:53 now…) and I’m about to start “studying”. Basically, this means I’m gonna read over some notes, and try to remember some lyrics for my prescribed texts, and my related texts. I think I’ll just use Green Street Hooligans as my related text, like I did in my half-yearly’s.

I worked earlier today (10 AM - 3 PM), so the first half of my day was a complete waste. I spent most of that time day dreaming about stupid things…Haha. I’d like to write a book. I want to. I have ideas - lots of them. Some of them are pretty good, or atleast they sound pretty good in my mind. But whenever I go to start, I can never motivate myself, and when I do, I’m never happy with what I’ve written and I delete it all and start again. But then I give up, so it always goes no where.

Anyway, now I begin to study…wish me luck.

My Last Proper Day of Year 11 Classes

Romulus, My Father

My last day of year 11 classes is over! I just have my end-of-year exams, and then i’m in year 12! =] awesome! Kind of feel pretty good about that, to be honest. Year 12 should be good.. And freedom is getting closer and closer every day…Freedom…Haha.

I received my first text for English next year…Romulus, My Father. I haven’t started it…I also got a book yesterday for English Extension…The Skull beneath the Skin by P.D. James…I started it, but so far it’s boring D=

My last lesson today was Ancient History…most of which i spent finishing the Ancient History assignment which was due that period…

I’ve also decided that i’m going to start taking pictures of everything that happens in my life…such as the pictures above. And i’ll use them to illustrate my blog posts. Look forward to more boring pictures.

Tomorrow Dad gets home after about 4 months out at sea…So i’m going to the airport at like 10am to pick him up with Mum and Rhys…should be fun. For now, I need to sleep.

Australian Government’s Censoring of the Internet

Okay, I’m 16, right? So I still go to High School. I’m in year eleven. Average teenager, blah blah blah. But I also happen to have a website/blog. A proper one. Not some something.blogger.com or something.wordpress.com thing. I have a proper domain name, with proper hosting that i paid for myself, not a free account on blogger where i whine about my middle-class life in the suburbs.

So anyway, as i was saying, i go to school in NSW. As some of you might know, the NSW government has introduced a state-wide proxy for all schools called the “DETPortal” (Department of Education and Training Portal) that blocks anything it deems “unappropriate’. Such as you.travel (a travel guide), any google search with the term “mp3″, most forums and even blogs. Even all the pictures on wikipedia are blocked. Maybe some little kid was looking up mammary glands?

This makes it awfully hard to complete any internet research tasks at school. For example, last year we were told to look up images of different products (clothes, for example) online and then make our own designs. Now, you’d think the first thing you’d do is go to google images, and search for, say, “shoe” or “shirt”. WRONG! Google Images? Blocked. Okay well…then maybe go to an online shoe shop? or shirt shop? WRONG! 99% of online shops are blocked, and the chances of that 1% that isn’t blocked having high-quality pictures of what you’re looking for are even smaller.

Now, I guess you’re getting an understanding of how hard it is to work within the boundaries of this “DETPortal”, so this brings me to today. I went to go to my website (www.darcyjohnperkins.com). It was blocked! Rediculous. Why would they block me? I don’t have anything inappropriate on here. Skip 5 minutes later - I’m now in computers class, and i go to my website to see if it works. Still blocked. How about if i google my name, and then click the link to my site? What’s this? It works. Magic! Right now I’m in class, writing this up whilst my teacher tries to access a page he needed to teach us - which just happens to be blocked by the DETPortal…

This post/rant really is meaningless, but I just enjoyed getting it off my chest about how truly ridiculous this DETPortal is. I can’t wait until they realise it’s negative effects on our learning and just remove it.

First Day Of School: Over!

Today was my first day of school! Today i officially started Year 11 at Eden Marine High School. I’m about to embark on the final two years of school - senior school. A time in which i hope to grow, experience new things, discover things about myself and more.

Today we went to our old seat, as usual. Sat around until bell time, as usual. And then went to assembly, as usual. Then we went to the gym and got our time tables, outlines of courses, and chose out sport, etc. Today i had:

  • Period 2: Physics
  • Period 3: English Advanced
  • Period 4: Ancient History
  • Period 5: Mathematics

We had spent all of period 1 getting our stuff, and talking about responsibilities and crap, so we went straight off to period 2. Physics - Oh joy!

Physics was good; we basically did nothing. Just talked half an hour first about basic school things, and responsibilities, etc. A big long blurb about Senior years and the HSC. Then we went into the actual Physics course, what we’ll be covering, when we hand things in, etc. We’ll be covering things like motion, space, electricity, etc. Which should be pretty interesting (im hoping)!

Next was english. Basically we just went over basic course things. What we’ll be doing, what books we’ll be reading, when assessments and assignments are, etc. We then talked a little about extension, and when that’ll be happening, etc. Kind of spent the whole hour not doing any actual work. That’s fine by me!

Ancient history…i must say was boring. Half the class are…well…i wont say it. But hopefully it should be a pretty good subject - maybe half the class will drop out (i hope!?) and we can got on with learning about Egypt and Greece (our subjects this year) and then we also get to do an assessment task on a chosen topic (we get to chose).

Maths was just maths…straight into work. We did a double sided page after getting our text books from Mrs Maxworthy, etc.

So! Looking forward to tomorrow, i suppose…

School goes back tomorrow…

Since i live in Australia, it’s now 2:40 AM on Tuesday the 29th…School goes back tomorrow :( As you can probably tell, i’m not super excited about that fact. But then again, it’s not too bad, to be honest. I’m actually really looking forward to starting my new subjects, especially Ancient History and English Extension. When I do English Extension 2 in year 12, I’ll also get to make a video, novel, short stor[ies], or something else that i forget. That’s exciting, especially since I’d like to be a journalist/writer/photographer/traveler/jack-of-all-trades.

For this year (Year 11) I chose to do:

  • English Advanced (2 Units)
  • English Extension 1 (1 Unit)
  • Maths Advanced (2 Units)
  • Maths Extension 1 (1 Unit)
  • Ancient History (2 Units)
  • Physics (2 Units)
  • Visual Arts (2 Units)
  • Computers (2 Units)

That’s a lot of units though, so i intend to drop one of the extensions, and i also might change from Physics to something else.
